What is Acupuncture Injection Therapy (AIT)?

Acupuncture Injection Therapy (AIT), also known as Biopuncture, involves the injection of sterile solutions such as botanicals, vitamins, and homeopathic medicines. The procedure is administered by a qualified Acupuncture Physician with specialty training and certification in injection therapy. Like acupuncture, fine disposable needles are inserted into traditional acupuncture points to administer the solution.

What is Acupuncture Injection Therapy Effective for?

AIT is used for acute and chronic pain, boosting immunity, controlling stress, increasing metabolism, and supporting overall health and wellness. Studies have shown that AIT can also increase the benefits of an acupuncture treatment. AIT aids healing by decreasing inflammation in injured tissues.

Commonly treated conditions include pain in the neck, back, shoulder, knee, elbow, and hip. AIT is also used to address muscle aches, arthritis, sciatica, bursitis, fibromyalgia, tendonitis, fatigue, and reduced immunity.

AIT is often referred to as a natural version of cortisone—without the risks or side effects that can come with steroid injections.

AIT can be especially helpful for stubborn, ongoing pain that may respond more slowly to acupuncture and cupping alone. Trigger points are tight knots in the muscles that never fully relax. They are often tense, tender, and sore to the touch. These knots may stem from traumatic injury or overuse (repetitive motion over a long period of time).

For example, fibromyalgia can often trigger widespread body pain caused by a buildup of toxins that need to be released through the lymphatic system. Not only do these areas hurt locally, but because muscles connect to tissues, nerves, tendons, and ligaments, they can cause “referred pain” that radiates to other parts of the body. This can contribute to tension headaches, jaw pain from clenching, sciatica, nerve pain, and peripheral discomfort.

Beyond pain management, AIT can also help improve energy, ease fatigue, support peripheral neuropathy, increase metabolism (which may aid in weight loss), and naturally boost the immune system.

What Substances Are Injected?

Acupuncture Injection Therapy involves small amounts of sterile injectable solutions including botanicals, vitamins, and homeopathic substances. Traumeel, Zeel, Engystol, Glutathione, B12, and Lipostat Plus are among the most commonly used therapies. These blends contain fixed combinations of diluted plant, mineral, and vitamin extracts.

These injectables offer a natural way to promote healing and immunity, reduce inflammation, boost energy, support mood, and decrease pain. They can be added to an acupuncture treatment or scheduled as a separate appointment.
