The traditional definition of empathy is:
The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.
To be an empath is to be gifted with the ability to feel the emotions or pain of another living being. Many people, especially those in the healing arts, identify as empaths.
While this gift can be a blessing, it can also be a burden.
Untamed empathy can weigh down even the strongest of spirits. For this reason, it is vital to learn how to protect your own energy and harness the benefits of your empathic spirit, without becoming burdened by it.
We have all heard the saying, “You cannot pour from an empty cup.” This western adaptation of a Chinese proverb is attributed to a famous conversation between the scholar Tokusan and Zen Master Ryutan.
In Zen Master Ryutan’s lesson, he explained,
“You are like this cup; you are full of ideas. You come and ask for teaching, but your cup is full; I can’t put anything in. Before I can teach you, you’ll have to empty your cup.”
As empaths, we tend to “fill our cups” with others’ emotions and pain. It is our nature to want to lend a helping hand, provide words of comfort and offer support to those who are suffering. While these works of compassion are good things, they can become hindrances to our own health and peace if we do not learn how to protect ourselves as we complete these loving acts.
It is vital to release feelings and pain that do not belong to us.
