January 2025
The gut-brain connection or gut health has become a leading focus in holistic health, shedding light on how the microbiome—a community of trillions of microorganisms in your digestive system—affects mental health, energy, and immunity. Overindulgence during the holiday season can disrupt this delicate balance, but simple, natural approaches can help restore harmony.
The Gut-Brain Connection Explained
Your gut and brain communicate through the vagus nerve and chemical messengers like serotonin, a neurotransmitter of which 90% is produced in the gut. An imbalanced microbiome can lead to increased inflammation, mood disorders, and weakened immunity. By nourishing your gut, you also nurture your mind and body.
Natural Approaches to Gut Health
Incorporate Fermented Foods.
Fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, and kefir are rich in probiotics, which help replenish beneficial bacteria in the gut. Try adding a tablespoon of sauerkraut to your meals or enjoy 4-6 ounces of Kombucha several days a week. We also recommend swapping cow yogurt or kefir for goat or coconut yogurt or kefir. By doing so, you limit potentially unhealthy effects of cow dairy such as antibiotics, excess estrogen from milking pregnant cows, or pus in the milk from infected udders.
Probiotics and Prebiotics.
Probiotics introduce healthy bacteria, while prebiotics (found in foods like garlic, onions, and banana peels) feed them. Raw vegetables, in particular, contain certain indigestible fibers that feed our friendly gut bacteria, and combining these in your diet enhances their effectiveness. If you’re looking for extra support to rebalance your gut, we have specialized “reset” probiotics designed for targeted needs such as UTIs, sinus health, digestive recovery, and addressing imbalances caused by antibiotics or medications. Unlike many store-bought options, which may not be strong enough for more specific health concerns, these probiotics are kept cold from production to delivery to maintain their effectiveness. Feel free to reach out for more details or schedule a Food Consultation to explore how these tools can support your journey to wellness.
Adequate Protein.
Start your day off with a high-protein shake in the morning containing all the amino acids and nutrients needed for a good start to health. Most knowledgeable healthcare professionals suggest we get at least 60-70 grams of protein per day into our diet. One easy way to get enough is to take a highly-nutritious protein drink such as the Metagenics line, available exclusively through healthcare providers, including our clinic, which typically contains 17 grams of protein per serving!
Acupuncture.
Often overlooked in the hurry to help ourselves with food is the energetic reset of the nervous system, including all those nerves in the stomach and intestines! The Chinese recommend receiving the “Four Gates” treatment (four needles) to reset your systems at least four times per year, typically when the seasons change. Acupuncture is a great preventive measure for health issues. It is also useful for rebooting and starting anew on your healthy, healing journey. The results are immediate—you will feel more calm in body, mind, and spirit.
Practice Mindful Eating.
Chewing slowly and savoring your food aids digestion and reduces stress, which can otherwise disrupt gut health. Try mindfulness techniques during meals to focus on gratitude and enjoyment.
Limit Sugar and Processed Foods.
Excess sugar and processed foods fuel harmful gut bacteria and lead to dysbiosis. Start the new year by swapping sugary snacks with whole fruits and nuts.
Herbal Teas and Digestive Tonics.
Herbal teas like peppermint, ginger, and chamomile can soothe the gut and help reduce bloating. Digestive tonics, such as diluted apple cider vinegar (ACV with the mother in it), promote healthy digestion before meals. One of our favorite recipes is super simple: blend ACV with “the mother,” raw organic honey, and water to create a soothing tea.
