What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Picture this:  You enter a chamber (in our case a type of tent) where the air pressure is increased in order to infuse your tissues–and every cell in your body– with additional, super-healing oxygen.  What are the healing affects?  Anything from cognitive issues and stroke recovery to wound healing to anti-aging, eradicating Lymes disease to heavy metal detox, and skin disorders…all of these are possible. It is also proven by the science–and already in our own experience!– to help people recover from Long Covid and Chronic Fatigue.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy treatments can be a wonderful addition to those who are wanting to increase energy and find healing without surgery, pills or dieting. This modern wonder of technology provides a unique opportunity never before possible in human history. We can truly harness the healing power of elevated oxygen!

There is a much longer list of health issues oxygen therapy can help. Keep reading to see if someone you care about may find answers to elusive health issues.

Differences in Equipment

First, let’s examine some major differences in the levels of oxygen pressure which these environments can create.  This is important, especially when it comes to contraindications (reasons why this environment could be harmful to someone with certain conditions).  The more pressure, the more potential for good in certain situations– as well as harm.

NOTE:  Most of the risks stemming from these high-pressure chambers will not be encountered in our chamber because we use much less pressure. But much of the “good” will definitely be there!

The $1 Million Dollar Version (not ours)

In large facilities like Boston Massachusetts General, this equipment may look like a submarine, and the cost is likely to be around $1 Million Dollars for the equipment!  A single treatment session may cost you or your insurance company $3000.  These environments are capable of creating two to three atmospheres of additional pressure above normal air pressure.  That translates to the pressure your body would experience at 66 to 99 feet under water. We have a friend for whom 40 treatments restored partial hearing after his sudden deafness in one ear.

Hospitals have machines that can increase the pressure to 2 or more Atmospheres, and they are often used to treat divers who have stayed too deep or too long under water. Also important, for high pressure systems like this, decompression time to return to a more normal atmosphere may be necessary, especially if you are under high pressure for a prolonged period. Refer to the reference section at the end of the article for further details.

Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (ours)

Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is what is available at Lotus Blossom Clinic.  This environment increases the pressure to only 1.3 Atmospheres, which is about the same pressure you would experience if you swim to the bottom of an 11-foot pool. This is significantly less pressure and risk, and significantly less expensive than the larger, intensive machines.  However, the benefits of mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy are still excellent.

The air we breathe in normal conditions is an average of 21% oxygen. In a mild hyperbaric chamber, oxygen levels are much higher (approaching 100%). It’s this pressured environment, infusing your very tissues and cells with rich oxygen, which brings on the healing.

For example, during a hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment, your lungs gather more oxygen than when breathing in average conditions. The main mechanism of this therapy is to increase the amount of oxygen in your blood and tissues. With repeated treatments, the temporary exposure to elevated oxygen encourages healthy tissue and blood oxygen levels, even after the therapy is completed.  Increased oxygen levels support your body’s natural healing abilities and you’ll run your best race ever for a few hours after your session!

A full-spectrum video

We highly recommend watching a video made in 2023 by Dr. Mark Hyman, interviewing Dr. Scott Sherr, an expert in the capabilities of all levels of hyperbaric chambers to help the body heal itself.  Use the link for the first item in the Reference Section below, entitled:   Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy:  A Novel Treatment for Longevity, Brain Health and Chronic Disease.

What happens during treatment?

You will comfortably sit in the hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber and be instructed to breathe normally. People typically report their ears may feel plugged as the pressure is raised; similar to the pressure changes when you are flying in an airplane. Everyone is different, and the extra oxygen coursing throughout your body may cause you to feel lightheaded.  This is a common, harmless effect of the treatment. After your hyperbaric oxygen therapy session, it is recommended that you, “take it easy” the rest of the day; hydrate, rest and eat well.

How long is the treatment?

Depending on the health issue(s), treatment time can range. The average session time is anywhere from 45 minutes to 90 minutes. If at any time you feel uncomfortable, you can exit the chamber. At 1.3 atmospheres of pressure, no decompression is required. You and your healthcare provider will determine what treatment plan is best for your specific case. It is also important to note that the success of the therapy is based on consistency. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy sessions must be done more than once to see maximum benefit. It is recommended to experience multiple sessions to allow your body the optimal chance to heal itself. Each person will be evaluated individually.

What are the Benefits?

This therapy has multiple benefits for various health concerns. It is extremely beneficial when fighting infections because the extra oxygen can disable the toxins of certain forms of bacteria. It also increases oxygen concentration in the tissues, which can stimulate the production of healing growth factors such as stem cells.  These are the most common issues that hyperbaric oxygen therapy can help:

  • Aging / Cellular Detox
  • Anemia / Blood Disorders
  • Athletic Performance
  • Arthritis / Inflammation
  • Autism
  • Autoimmune Conditions (MS, Lupus, etc.)
  • Cognitive Decline / Dementia /
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Cancer
  • Coronary Heart Disease
  • Fatigue and Long Covid
  • Health & Beauty
  • Lyme Disease
  • Immune Support
  • Neuropathy / Nerve Pain
  • Metabolic Issues / Weight Loss
  • Osteoporosis / Osteopenia / Fracture
  • Radiation Injury / Post-Chemo Care
  • Skin Disorders / Scar Tissue
  • Stroke
  • Trauma
  • Prostate Issues
  • Wound Healing / Burns / Bed Sores
  • Vaccine Injuries

Healing More Than We Know

In general, this treatment can help anything extra oxygen can help.  We have a friend whose child experienced vaccine damage, resulting in severe body and head twitches (“ticks”) which also interfered with his speech, sleep, and concentration.  Hyperbaric oxygen treatments have truly helped him.  Now you’d never know he had that injury!

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is also being studied for its benefits in managing acute and long cases of COVID-19.  Many clinical trials are currently being completed to evaluate oxygen’s role in the healing process of SARS-related viruses. The first trials completed show very positive results!

What are the Risks?

The risks that you read about regarding hyperbaric chambers are almost all documented using the intense, high-pressure chambers of 2 or more Atmospheres. However, some risks may be encountered. The most common risk is for people who cannot clear their ears due to a head cold, allergies or for any other reason.  So, if you have trouble on airplane flights (and cannot clear your ears) this treatment is not for you…unless you can work with a medical provider to solve the ear issue. Check with our medical staff or your MD for potential solutions.  Mild side effects during treatment also include claustrophobia, fatigue, and possibly headaches.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is generally a safe procedure with extremely rare complications. It is important to note that in our system the entire chamber is not filled with 100% oxygen. The person being treated wears a plastic face mask to deliver the oxygen. This reduces the risk of fire and allows you to have electronic devices in the chamber with you, such as a tablet or phone.

  • Ensure your practitioner is aware of your medical needs and any diagnoses.
  • Eat before and after your treatment, but not during.
  • Have any medications you may need with you.
  • If you have one, wear your medical alert bracelet to your treatment appointment.
  • Make sure you have gone to the toilet prior to entering the chamber.
